Solutions for special requirements
Beyond machining modifications into standard couplings, R+W also engineers specialized solutions, based on detailed performance and quality requirements. The oil industry provides one example of this work. For pump applications the dual flex LPA/LPAI is a perfect fit, meeting all of the requirements of the American Petroleum Institute’s API 610 standard for centrifugal pump packages and the couplings that connect them. As the name implies, the API represents the American oil and gas industry, but its guidance is also adhered to in projects throughout the world. On request R+W also designs and manufactures couplings in accordance with the more strict requirements of API 671, which defines special purpose couplings for the petroleum, chemical and gas industries, and relates primarily to high performance couplings for turbo compressors. In these cases couplings are custom tailored for applications ranging in torque capacity from 500 to 24,000 Nm.
Jörg Duggen (Head of Engineering at R+W) explains the basic construction of both special disc pack coupling types: „The intermediate piece is radially fixed with a component which assures a catch safety and dry-running properties in case of breaking discs. It is radially removable and has a special construction so it can get disassembled without moving the hubs. You receive the coupling completely mounted.“ The standard disc pack couplings for API 610 are available in 6 different sizes and in metric (LPA) design as well as in imperial (LPAI).
For special requirements R+W also has an XL hub, which allows for large motor shafts to be used without needing to necessarily upsize the whole coupling, saving space and cost.
